Greek police cracks child porn ring

Greek police have cracked a major child porn ring operating via the Internet, with 39 people charged in connection with the case, according to a police announcement on Wednesday.

Police said a joint investigation by the Athens and Thessaloniki electronic crime squads lasted more than three months. Those under arrest included 37 Greeks and two foreign nationals. All the accused were living and working in Athens, Thessaloniki and 10 other cities around Greece.

Of the 39 people charged, 20 were caught in the act of disseminating hard-core pornographic material from their computers during a coordinated operation carried out simultaneously in several cities at once.

The investigation was begun based on information supplied by German authorities, who had tracked the electronic traces of 170 Greek Internet users in one of their own investigations, during which they discovered the existence of a file sharing network used to disseminate child porn.

ATHENS, Greece: Greek police say they have charged 25 people including a priest and a neurosurgeon for allegedly downloading child pornography from the internet.

Police say they acted on a tip from Interpol to detain the suspects in Athens, Thessaloniki and another three Greek cities, as well as on the islands of Mykonos and Mytilini.

A police statement issued Tuesday says the suspects allegedly subscribed to Web sites that displayed pornographic pictures and videos of children as young as 6 months old being sexually abused by adults.

It says the 25 suspects include a priest attached to a church near the southern town of Sparta, a neurosurgeon, a gynecologist and an army officer.

If you come across child pornography on the internet or you know someone downloading it, report it.

Five Greek men from Athens, Patras, Thessaloniki and Drama have been charged with being part of an international child pornography ring after allegedly buying computer files with indecent images from an Italian pedophile who was arrested earlier this year.

Six computer hard disks and 49 CDs with indecent images were seized by officers of the electronic crimes squad who conducted the raids in cooperation with Europol as part of an operation that was carried out simultaneously in 20 European countries.

The five suspects allegedly bought pornographic material from the Italian and built up archives of tens of thousands of pictures. Police are investigating whether they sold these images over the Internet.

The Italian, who was not named, allegedly traveled through Eastern Europe and abused children as young as 5 and sold images of the assaults over the Internet. He allegedly charged customers 2,000 euros to watch the live rape of a child.
