I agree with all of that, Stassa. In every country, immigrants are a convenient scapegoat for politicians to avoid facing up to their own miserable failings.

Just for the record, I grew up in Agios Nikolaos, next door to Agios Panteleimonas and one more Athens neighbourhood where "concerned citizens" are trying to "figure out what to do about immigration". So hardly the pampered Ekali residence mr Velopoulos accuses of ignorance of "real life" or whatever he's talking about.

Why do Greek politicans think everyone has such a short-term memory? The "problem" with immigration started less than a decade ago. Kendro, from Patissia to Omonoia was a shithole long before that and nobody lifted their little finger to do something about it. Fylis, Plateia Vathis, Plateia Amerikis, Metaksourgeio, Sokratous, Laxanagora... indeed those are not Ekali, Sounio or Kolonaki. They have always been neglected and ignored, left to their fate by successive governments. And now they're gonna fix the problem by sending the dirty poor from overseas packing back to Turkey? What a brilliant idea. I wish I had a magic wand like that myself.

That's just a big bunch of bullshit ND and Laos are selling- and Pasok or the others are not much better. Venizelos who is quoted here doesn't even know what he's talking about, the proposed amendment would target immigrants who were accused of any breach of the law, even before they were condemned like he says. That's what's so mind-bogglingly stupid -and frightening, with it.
