Women in Greece can use public transport for free on the International Women’s Day on Sunday.
All women can travel with transport facilities in Athens and the second largest city of Thessaloniki free of charge, and travel for free with Hellenic Railways and the KTEL bus services all over Greece, said Transport and Communications Minister Evripidis Stylianidis.
“This initiative indicates a minimum symbolic gesture of recognition for the role and contribution of women in modern-day society,” the minister said.
He hoped that through these activities, people will have the awareness to honor and respect women all year round.

I read that today, lucky you. We don’t get anything here, just speeches…ciao
It’s a great move to honor women in Greece. At least 1 day will do for them in public transpo. Here in my country, even if the president is a woman, she doesn’t seem to care.
What a wonderful gesture. Wish we had that in the UK. I wonder where I’d go and where you will be going.
That is really nice also. I often wondered why we do not celebrate the International Women’s Day in the USA, and my sister said it’s because that in the USA, women’s day is every day and we don’t need a special day to celebrate or herald that.
Shemp,
I don’t know if “everyday is women’s day in the USA” . Many people believe that sexism was the reason why Senator Hillary Clinton lost the Democratic candidature and Sarah Palin lost the election for McCain.

Maybe we could learn a thing or two from the Greeks in this regard.
