On Thursday (3 April), the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) issued open letters to EU governments as well as the European Commission, calling for the red light until Greece fully complies with EU and international law.

The letter cites “the unacceptable conditions for asylum claimants in Greece, the obstacles to accessing a fair determination procedure and the risk of other serious human rights violations” as reasons for the move.

“Greece is not a safe place for those in need of protection,” Bjarte Vandvik, the head of the ECRE, said.

  1. A journo coined the term “Hellantanamo” last November writing in Ελευθεροτυπία. Might come handy. And by the way, I’m guessing that Boeing Co., Blackwater and the rest of the pack are starting to take notice of “investment opportunities” in the Aegean. Fortress Europe® will seem very familiar to these folks anyway. There are still slaves. And there is no MLK they have to kill, too.

  2. George says:

At least in Gitmo, (the few documented cases of abuses aside, and of course the guilty parties jailed) the prisoners get 3 hot meals a day, medical treatment, prayer mats, and a Koran issued upon detention, as well as preferential treatment (i.e., dayroom privileges, TV, sodas etc) with good behavior. Remember, it’s a military prison!

However, with Patra, a supposed immigrant holding area? I’d like to see what they get when they arrive in Patras?
