Same-Sex Marriage Update

I believe that Greek bloggers were instrumental in putting pressure on the Greek government to look into the possibility of same-sex marriage in Greece. Personally, I am thrilled that bloggers got organised and managed to spread the word internationally. And support for gay rights in Greece came from from far and wide. Thank you to everyone who emailed and messaged me supporting the campaign.

Greek authorities are considering adopting a law that would allow same-sex couples to marry in a civil ceremony, the country’s NET TV said on Monday.

The Greek Justice Ministry pledged to establish a working group on the rights of gay couples living together, which would “analyze all aspects of the issue, international practice and the existing domestic legal and social framework.”

Well done, people. Let’s hope that this step forward will lead to real change.

“Real change”? Not a chance. Greece is still being dragged, kicking and screaming, into the early twentieth century. The idea that it might embrace the common European values of the early 21st century is hilarious!
