Police Brutality

I just wanted to point you to an earlier post here at THIS IS NOT MY COUNTRY which might have been lost in the holiday period. It is about the European Court of Human Rights ruling in the case of Fani-Yannula Petropoulou-Tsakiris, a Roma woman who was abused by police and suffered a miscarriage as a result. The Greek Helsinki Monitor brought the case to the court and won. She was awarded 21,000 euros to be paid by the state. Panayote Dimitras of GHM said about the case (quoted from the Athens News this week)

This is the fourth conviction in 2007 related to police violence [against Gypsies]. This idicates that there is a serious problem of police violence and impunity. It also shows that there is institutional racism in the Greek police. The Greek Helsinki Monitor has repeatedly called on the state to deal with such cases before they reach the European Court

There is an article in the Athens News this week about the case which I will link to it when it comes out online. Read the full case and the court ruling here.

UPDATE: The article from the Athens News is now online. Also, here are the court facts of the case as printed in the Athens News..
