What a Day

Yesterday, the kid fractured his leg. Yep, he’ll be in plaster for a month or so. He’s got the crutches which he thinks is cool today but we’ll see how goes once he’s bored with the hipness. The doctors have said that we need to be really careful with this particular type of fracture because it’s in the exact place where the bone grows. They don’t think that it will cause any long-term problems with growth but they are erring on the side of caution. I am worried of course. Who wouldn’t be ? I reckon that’s 95% of my job as a mum. To worry without letting on to the kid.

The worse thing at the moment is that they have told us that he won’t be able to play basketball for much longer than a month. Possibly up to three months off. He’s just got into the main team at his club and is in the junior league. I am sure that his team will reserve his place for when he returns but it is a shame for him to be missing out on his training and matches for so long. It is something he loves and is so committed to (he keeps his basketball shoes in their original box with the paper inside. And believe me, for the kid, that is really something!). And what’s he going to do with himself at the weekends ? Drive me round the bend, I’m sure, because he doesn’t do boredom very well.

On the bright side, school breaks up in a few days so christmas goes into full gear. I haven’t done a thing yet but I’m a last minute kind of a girl. I say every year that I’ll get more organised and start earlier but where’s the fun in that ? In a strange way, I enjoy that panic and mayhem of trying to get everything done in a few days. And seeing as we have no heating in our house yet, it’s a good way of staying warm !

So, posting might be patchy over the holidays but here’s a picture of my tree to keep you amused. It’s the picture of it from last year but I love this one so much and I haven’t been able to get such a good one this time round…

DD, Not much fun being on crutches at Christmas … I hope your son’s bones heal really quickly and he is soon back playing basket ball. I also hope you have coloured plaster like we have here now and, if not, that it is soon covered in friends’ graffiti.
