Gift Idea
Published by deviousdiva November 24th, 2007 in Books. It’s only November but some of the shops in my neighbourhood are already displaying christmas decorations and gift ideas. The countdown does not begin in my house until after December 16th because of a childhood promise to allow one of my sisters to enjoy her birthday in full without being caught up in the frenzy of christmas. Having said that, I have started thinking about presents. Seeing as I will order online, using the vast amounts of pennies I have earned through blogging (!), I will have to start fairly soon so that things arrive in time. Books are always my favorites but books by friends are the best. There are always so many to choose from, I find it very helpful to have some recommendations.
they’re right, Helen, we can’t just go on battling against our biology.
sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll it is then.
So here’s mine to you. I’ve got it and it makes me laugh every time I look at it.
I love Demented by my friend, Jacky Fleming.
Any recommendations from you are greatly appreciated…

I love this book too … my husband and daughters gave it to me one Mothers’ Day, though they all wanted to claim credit for having chosen it. I look a bit too much like the main protagonist for comfort!
William Hague’s biography of William Wilberforce is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time, with food for thought on almost every page. I also keep going back to A History of the Wife by Marilyn Yalom. Jonathan Sacks, The Home We Build Together (for people in the UK) is an inspiring book about bringing people together. A poetry anthology called “Staying Alive” was one of the longest-lived presents I had a couple of years ago. Haruki Murakami, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle or Norwegian Wood. Specially if you can find a cult version in red/green of the latter. Never failed yet with this for children - The Runaways - a graphic novel:
But, having read your blog for a couple of years, I imagine that we probably would like the same books, or that the love of your life may well know Runaways, in which case you’ve probably read all of these already! Still make great presents, though!
LINK EDITED SO THAT IT DOESN”T RUN INTO THE SIDEBAR. I WILL HAVE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WITH EXTRA LONG URLS!
Thank you for your suggestions Margaret. I haven’t read any of them but I will certainly look them up. I certainly FEEL like the main protagonist in “Demented”. LOL.
Devious Diva, how about General Makrygiannis’s Memoirs? Actually, you can read the whole thing here:
