From the Athens News

A TOTAL of four Athens police officers could face disciplinary action for beating and humiliating two young men accused of mugging an elderly woman last year.

The incident, which stoked up a national controversy, emerged in June when a five-minute video clip recorded on a mobile telephone surfaced on youtube.com (a popular video-sharing website). The video shows the two youths being forced to slap each other hard on the face, while one police officer kicks and hits them with a wooden stick, ordering them to “hit harder”.

The four officers in question, who have been suspended from duty since June, are set to appear in front of a Greek police disciplinary committee. The officers, whose names have not been released to reporters, risk being thrown off the police force.

The police sergeant at the Omonia station, where the incident occurred, was transferred to the police station in Psychiko, an upscale northern Athens suburb.

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said the incident was a severe blow to Greece’s image.
