Sad to see the extreme-right Nationalist party of Laos get 10 seats in the new government. They are on the inside for the first time since the end of the fascist dictatorship of Greece. Your thoughts ?
[I have no more time today online.
OTE have said they are coming on Saturday to reconnect us. We'll see...]

finally an open invitation
to take everything to the streets ,,
noone can hide in the parliament forever.!
since everyone seems to have a voice
lets watch and see ,what they really have to say.
let the vipers speak , this is not a society
which can be poisened easily .
although it doesnt love itself (it=society)
IF and when it rears its ugly head
be assured that it will be chopped .
but …… the sum of greek
society will have to
make a very big decision POLITICALLY
BECAUSE socially we have accepted
as greeks that were a not a swell society
for ourselves, we are at a historical
point were all hell will break loose
two months from now and will last two years .
bringing about change .
The entrance of LAOS was the worst part of these elections. They have 10 seats and more than 100.000 Greek citizens vote this party. In general I believe that nationalism will rise again in Greece, as it rises every single day almost in all over the world. And of course LAOS is not responsible for this. The nationalistic and xenophobic ideas already existed before LAOS. LAOS simple tell what people want to hear and nothing more.
Hopefully, they don’t have something really special to say about the real issues of the everyday life: economy, education, environment, bureaucracy or external politics. So, I hope that people will understand that and LAOS will not be in our parliament next time.
This is the SECOND time we have an extreme right party in the Greek parliament, the first was in 1977 with EPEN (where some of the LAOS people come from).
I find it interesting from a sociological standpoint, but scary from a real-life standpoint.
And their logo scares me a bit too, for some strange reason.
Still, I guess this is democracy. Now I have to accept that two parties I don’t agree with to an extreme are in Parliament – Communists and Fascists.
At last, after decades of having parties like “New Democracy” and “PASOK” to represent Greeks with an I.Q. as high as 45, we now have a party in the Greek parliament to cover a long standing need of the Republic of Greece: the representation of those Greeks with an I.Q. below 10.
I find nationalists scary as Melusina says above as well. As immigrants, we all should. However, I am curious about this one thing if anyone has an answer to this.
I’ve heard (over and over) how many Greeks believe the USA was responsible for and supported the JUNTA (which the EPEN and LAOS party was based on). If this is true, then does that mean that this LAOS party would be (or is) Pro-American? Because from the little I heard from this Karatzaferis(?) character, he didn’t seem too fond of America either (like KKE, and other fringe groups, etc.)
So, my question is this: Has LAOS party changed there stance on America? And if they had actually won the election (in theory) what would be their foreign policy towards America?
Again, because of their anti-immigrant, racist policies I don’t think they would ever win, and certainly America would not support a party that espouses racism.
I guess what I’m try to figure out is how the Americans could have EVER supported a Junta party that did not like them in the first place?
How many populist parties do you (all) know that have a solid program, and which they follow to the end? Their only care is to get the votes of the illiterate, whether they are illiterate by deed or by circumstance. The greek blogosphere is primarily a leftist space, and as such it doesn’t really give an accurate picture of the entire electorate. Go and talk with people in the traditional cafes, or up in the mountains. But be prepared for what u will here. Even educated people have shocked me by calling the fires “terrorism” and “politically motivated” (just one example). When I asked how do u explain that, the justification was simply a regurgitation of the partidist propaganda.
The great winner in these elections has been the abstention (this is the most accurate description I have come across. If u find the time, it is worth a look.
Apologies. This is the link.
INTERSESTING LINK I SEEM TO AGREE WITH ALMOST ALL FACTS. thanks itelli . =Z=
“How many populist parties do you (all) know that have a solid program, and which they follow to the end? Their only care is to get the votes of the illiterate, whether they are illiterate by deed or by circumstance. ”
Wrong, dead wrong. The position of the far right is nigh on intellectually unassailable. That is why the only means of “dealing” with them is enacting “hate crime” and “thought crime” legislation. A guy like Nick Griffin of Britain’s BNP would make complete mince of the fools at the helm of the Conservatives and Labor. That’s why they don’t debate him, only “denounce” him, as though that were any sort of refutation.
LAOS’s rise is fantastic news, as far as I’m concerned.
