Dirty City

Yes. It’s true. Athens is a dirty city. One of the dirtiest in Europe. We all know that there is a lack of green space. I challenge ANYONE to find a good local park for a kid to play in.

Does anyone know of a free, clean outside pool (lido) in Athens, for me and the kid to visit?

68% of Greeks are dissatisfied with the situation as compared to 46 in the rest of Europe. Pollution is a major factor with 94% of people saying it is the main problem in the capital (compared with 67% elsewhere in Europe)

Read the rest of the article at Kathimerini here. It’s nothing surprising for us that live here.

In Filothei, they have a very nice park for kids to play, and in Alimos next to the sea, there is a huge park as well. Both are clean and in nice areas.

There’s a great park with tennis and basketball courts for adults, and a playground and train with green areas/trees/sandbox for kids in Neo Psychiko. It’s free and they collect recycle old newspapers as “toll” for the train.

A good pool for free. No. I paid 20 euros once for 4 hours. After that I bought one of those blow up ones for the balcony and sit in that. I know I can’t swim in it, but it’s 20 euros and lasts all summer for splashing and such (if I’m not breathing ash from the forest fires, that is).

Thank you for answering the challenge. I am happy to be proved wrong on this one!

Quite possibly the largest park in Athens is called “Antonis Tritsis” and is located in the tricity area (Kamatero, Ag. Anargaroi, Ilion). It is approximately 1-1/2X the size of Syngrou park on Kiffisias ave.

The Antonis Tritsis park has a few lakes with ducks/geese etc, as well as plenty of trails to explore for jogging/walking. And, at the end of your afternoon, you can go right next to the park and have a coffee or snack at the mini-mall (ESCAPE). There is also an Organic Village in the park where you shop for Organic products, have a coffee at the Organic Coffee Shop, or have lunch at the Organic Taverna.

Website for Antonis Tritsis Park:

http://park.ornithologiki.gr/ (has maps, info etc)

Directions to the park:

- Take Attiki Odos towards ELEFSINA
- Get off at Exit 7 (DIMOKRATIAS STREET)
- Turn left (under bridge) onto Dimokratias St.
- Go up about 2-3KM and you will see the CARREFOUR Market on your right
- Turn right at that light and you are at the park…
