An ambitious initiative has been launched by the Health ministry to make sure that every child in Greece is immunised and receives all the necessary boostershots, regardless of their nationality or residence status, by the year 2010.

The president of the Hellenic Centre for Infectious Disease Control, Yiannis Pierroutsakos, who is heading the project said

It won’t be easy because every beginning is difficult, but it will come together slowly. This is something that has probably never before been attempted anywhere in the world. In two or three years we will have a full registry of the children who have been inoculated… We will set an example for the rest of Europe

According to Mr. Pierroutsakos, the majority of the population is vaccinated. Most of the non-vaccinated or under-vaccinated are uninsured, immigrant or Roma children. Mr. Pierroutsakos also said

We have to turn to these people because they really need it and because we have to fortify the country against possible infectious diseases
