Newspaper Porn

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been talking about this for a while now, with friends and family. How do you explain to the kid what that’s all about? He’s busy getting the James Bond series that comes out every Sunday on a major national newspaper (Ethnos) but he does notice the porn. There seems to be great pressure recently to give it away with the news in order to sell… the news.

Human nature? Sad? Or both?

UPDATE: I re-read this post and realised that it might imply that Ethnos bundling free porn with its Sunday edition. It is not. What I should have written:

He’s busy getting the James Bond series that comes out every Sunday on a major national newspaper (Ethnos) but he does notice the porn being given away on other publications

Apologies for the misunderstanding.

I think if newspapers have to bribe people with porn to encourage sales, it’s a sad reflection on those who offer it and those who buy it. In addition, it’s my belief that these media outlets are likely infringing on film and/or distribution rights of some kind.

I’m glad that kiosks were raided and various people will be prosecuted, though we’ll see if the latter sticks with all the payoffs and corruption.

    Jeez, that’s nuts.

A couple of weeks ago, the bundling of porn material with regular newspaper was judged by the Greek consumer protection agency (Συνήγορος του Πολίτη) to be an illegal activity and they made recommendations which I understood heralded the end of this era. Porn material, especially DVDs, had been bundled with newspapers for quite a few years now.

Even the parliament house TV channel has sex line adds and porn shows late at night. As if we don’t already have at least 2 channels playing porn 24/7. At least you simply wipe those out of you channel list, but the parliament house channel? People will think it is our politicians starring.

Jinger, you are incorrect with the comments you make about the VOULI (Parliament) channel. It does not have sex adds and porn shows late at night. It is not a 24 hour channel, if you tune in late at night, all you see is a list of the programs showing the following day. If you are interested in what is showing on VOULI then feel free to follow this link:

I’m also curious as to which two channels show porn 24/7. As far as I’m aware, you get the ‘late night’ adult movies on Filmnet 1 & 3 as well as the occaisional ’soft’ movie shown on other channels (again late at night).

Satellite TV is a different matter (if that is what you meant), of course the advent of satelite allows you to pick up stations from anywhere but again, if you bring satellite TV into your house, it’s also your responsibility to activate the parental controls to block unsuitable programming.

As for the newspapers, I’d like to point out that it’s not the norm for soft core porn DVD’s to be bundled inside them. It’s certain publications that do this and I think that if Ethnos needs to give away soft core porn to make people buy their publication then it says a lot for the standard of news in their newspaper. I know the newspapers I read have never had to entice me with such crap.

Well, what I want to know is why do people need porn as an incentive to buy a newspaper when you can get it free off the internet?

Still, Greeks are complaining about T.V. news (and justifiably so), but it doesn’t seem like they care much about newspapers either. I don’t really get the whole “porn with your Sunday paper” thing, it is sort of on par with the idea of having breakfast at a strip club. Its all a little creepy.

Still, I’m not anti-porn. I just don’t see why it has to accompany a newspaper.

I did not mean to apply that Ethnos carries porn DVDs. It doesn’t. It was an awkward sentence. What I meant to say was that when the kid goes to buy his James Bond film on Sundays, he sees the porn being sold on other “newspapers”. Apologies for the mistake.

You are right, EllasDevil, Vouli does not show porn or sex line ads. It is one of the safest channels out there and has some very good programming.

Other private channels DO run sex talk/chat ads (whatever they are called) very late at night and the very occasional soft porn movie (Alter)

I assume the 24/7 porn channels are on satellite?

There are two channels that keep looping ads for “call me now” lines which have girls stripping etc. These channels have no names as far as I could tell. I imagine they are pirate channels. Scan for them. They are 24/7. I erased them from my list of channels as porn has more POV than any other type of content.

I am pretty sure the VOULI channel did have chunks of “call me now” sex ads running for long time slices late at night. However, I am willing to accept I am wrong but keep an eye out. I won’t take their TV guide as a proof of anything. They probably consider sex ads commercials like all others and if they show them at the right time slot they technically don’t have to answer to anyone. Ads are not part of any channel’s program guide. Note how their program guide does not say “end of programme”.

Unfortunately for this thread but fortunately for me, I moved out of Athens on Saturday so I won’t be able to confirm all of the above as I can no longer get good reception.

    I am surrounded by trees!
