Votanikos NOW
It seems that the bulldozers are moving in on Votanikos today. I am trying to find out what is going on… I'll let you know as soon as I know… We knew this was coming but now what ?
UPDATE: Panayote Dimitras of the Greek Helsinki Monitor informed me that the demolition of the Votanikos area has started but so far the settlement I visited has not been affected. It's only a matter of time now but the main issue is that no alternatives have been found for the people who live there. As far as I know no eviction has been issued yet either. The summer is almost upon us and many of the Roma in that area will be leaving Athens to take up seasonal jobs. This is the traditional time of year to "cleaning up" and ridding areas of Roma communities.
I will keep updating as I get news…

DD, what happened on Friday? I expect you’ll fill us in when you return ot blogging during weekdays, since I’ve (as usual) not been able to find a trace of this news in the mainstream. Looking forward.
I will post everything I find out as I get it from GHM. At the moment, demolition has begun but not of the actual settlements. The worrying thing is that no eviction order has been delivered so there are no proceedings in place to hear the cases of the families who live there and to find alternative housing (in accordance to the law)
My guess is that they will try and do the usual thing here and illegally bulldoze the houses (and pocessions) and hope no-one will notice or care.

DD, is it possible to remove the bull posted above? Who is this unwanted bot with nothing else better to do? If Der Amerikaner is reading, get a hobby and get a life.
