Why don’t you have the discussions that you say you want. I am anti-immigration but I don’t want to kill immigrants or treat them badly. I just don’t want them here. It would be nice to see more viewpoints, and a reasonable debate between them. It is, in my opinion, perfectly reasonable to debate your values and beliefs. You can even lose that debate without surrendering your belief in them; it is not necessary to have every answer at your fingertips.

However, it is important to be debating from the same core principles. In humanities, as in mathematics, all derived principles are based off of certain core assumptions. If you can’t agree on those basics, you won’t be able to have a meaningful debate. Perhaps it would be useful to agree on what the core beliefs of this community are. That way, people could exchange opposing viewpoints that are nonetheless based on compatible principles. Instead of preaching to the choir (with people who already agree), or shouting into the wind (with people who will never agree), we could hold rational discussions with people we could, at some point, find common ground.

Without debate, we’re doomed to follow the strongest voices instead of the wisest ones. It is okay if DD decides that some things will be axiomatic, because some things _must_ be assumed; and she is just as qualified to decide what those are as you or I. If you find that these core assumptions are incompatible with yours, you should evalute whether you, she, and everyone else here will still benefit from your contributions.
