If you haven't already (or if you did a long time ago), make sure you read the following books in the very near future: The Bluest Eye Beloved Song of Solomon. tonimorrison2.jpg Happy Birthday Toni Morrison. You are an inspiration.

Thank you to Sokari at Black Looks. She also has a short video clip of Toni Morrison speaking (amazing voice too) and where the above quote is from. Go and watch it …

Update: I made a big mistake in this post by not crediting Dogonland for her brilliant tribute to Toni Morrison on her blog. Sokari got the shoutout about her birthday from her. Sincere apologies from me, Dogonland.

Morrison is marvellous! You should add “Sula” to that list, I think. I first came across her when browsing in a bookshop. I spotted some comment on the cover like “the most damning indictment of slavery ever written” and was immediately intrigued. I thought it a huge claim to make for a book, but once I’d read it, I had to agree. Also saw her interviewed by Salman Rushdie, on telly, years ago. You’d have thought it was Rushdie being interviewed, as he talked so much she could hardly get a word in. Even so, she was regal. A formidable intellect combined with a gracious humanity. She’s the bee’s knees for me!
