Nearest Book
Published by deviousdiva October 28th, 2006 in Personal.I picked up this meme from G Bitch. It’s a tag yourself one, so if you fancy doing it go ahead. If you don’t have a blog, feel free to post your sentances here in the comments.
1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
5. Don’t you dare dig for that “cool” or “intellectual” book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
Here’s mine:
My father came home from his office, where he had stopped on his return from Boston. Over a cup of coffee, he informed us that some people had called the Rebbe’s office during the day about a problem in the yeshiva that had to do with Asher Lev’s daughter. Because my father had been out of the city, the problem had been handled by one of the younger men in the office.
” ‘A mistake once implanted cannot be eradicated,’ ” my father quoted again, looking at me over the rim of the cup
Which is spooky for reasons that I can’t go into on this blog but those who know me will know what I mean! Enjoy

It IS a great meme. Thanks for picking it up and thanks for the link. I’ll let you know when I do it again.
I can’t do this one, all the nearest books I have are thesis related works, nothing interesting, unless you are into my thesis topic. =p Even so, I’d be labelled a bigger nerd than I already am.
…….A neighbour stood in his shirt sleeves, drinking from a mug as he watched the square. A single bird crossed the sky. I had never seen such snow in central London. Lelia had been working on the flat - her “nesting instinct”, she said - and the floorboards were glowing mellow slabs of age, and there were new curtains.
Melusina, I think we should start a “Proud to be a Nerd” club. You have made me so curious now as to what your four sentances would be if you did pick up your nearest book !
Thanks for posting danilena
I guess the next part of the meme should be can anyone guess which book the words are from.
Well, I’ve got 13 books in two stacks on my desk right next to me, and if I pick up the pick at the top of the stack right next to me, I don’t think it would make any sense at all out context (hell, I’m not convinced it makes sense IN context). It is one of those heady, scholastic works on heroism in ancient Greek poetry called “The Best of the Achaians”. But I will sate your curiousity…
From the words of this composition, we see that Pyrrhos met his death at Delphi as the direct result of a quarrel over slices of meat that were being distributed as a sacrifice:
When he quarreled with the attendants
over his rightful timai
he killed him
in his own precinct, right by the broad center of the Earth
In another variation on this myth, the killer is not Apollo himself but one of his temple attendants:
And he went to the god
bringing the riches of first-fruit offerings from Troy.
And there a man with a makhaira smote him
as he got into a quarrel over slices of meat.
And the Delphians, conductors of xenoi, were greatly vexed.

So there you go. Too bad my computer isn’t by the bed, where the closest book is “Joy Luck Club” right on my nightstand. I can’t read solely from scholastic research stuff or I’d go insane.
nearest book : jack london:”THE GLIMMERING LIGHT OF DAY”
PAGE 123,FIFTH SENTENCE:
Oh the poor man,..what misery!
Perhaps what we call life, is no more than a graveyard which recycles itself and every observent human being there
anouncing his own death. Coming back a moment to reality
he saw the water ripple and rising, an a bird hanging on the railing
of the boat , looking him right in the eye.
