Drowned

Full report at Scotsman News

Someone just notified me of this shocking incident.

A group of immigrants have accused the Greek coastguard of throwing them into the sea after their boat was intercepted. Six people drowned and three others are missing. One of the survivors, Muhammedi Alti, said

Greek security forces threw us into the sea from a coastguard boat without even asking whether we knew how to swim

Apparently the boat they were travelling in was near the coast of the Greek island of Chios. The coastguards from the island captured them, took them near to the Turkish port of Karaburun and dumped them in the water.

Muhammedi Alti said

I still can’t believe what we have lived through. We managed to swim to the shore with my wife. We had thought that human rights would be more valuable in Europe

The accounts of what happened have not been verified. The Greek foreign and merchant marine ministries said they had no knowledge of the incident.

The Turkish coastguards rescued 31 people and recovered the bodies of 6 more. They said that they were not contacted by the Greek coastguards (as is the usual practice) and that they launched the rescue mission after residents reported hearing cries from the sea.

The commander of Turkish coastguard, Rear Admiral Can Erenoglu, said that no vessel was spotted at the scene of the rescue. Erenoglu also claimed that his officers had witnessed the Greek coastguard abandoning illegal immigrants at sea on two previous occasions, once earlier this year and again in 2004.

I just want to reiterate that this incident has NOT been verified yet.

But if it is true it is shocking to say the least.

UPDATE: Thank you Anon for alerting me to this. I don’t know how I missed it. Not paying attention I guess.

As you say, this is now international news. Here are links to a variety of articles on this story.

UPDATE 2
I posted this story with six links to articles from different sources (one of them refuting the claims) and I still get accused of not covering the whole story. I did say twice in the post that the reports are unconfirmed. I am getting really tired of this continual denial of negative aspects in this country. Greece is not perfect. Get used to it.

How about we try and find out what really happened ? If anyone has any other links, please email them to me.

Here’s another article, this time from Spiegel

http://www.turkishweekly.net also has articles confirming this story, as well as Headline News Greece. It is now an international story.

Well, I certainly hope it isn’t true, although I haven’t seen a story that offers real proof yet.

oh my gosh. this european immigration thing is being handled so poorly.
thank you for continuing to write, i really appreciate it, we need voices like yours, depsite the trolls.
i’ve been gone for awhile, so this is a bit late, but am glad to see that you didn’t stop blogging.

Greek authorities have denied the accusations. Please cover the full story.

  5. 5 deviousdivaNo Gravatar

I did. I posted links to 6 different articles and I also said in the original post:

“The Greek foreign and merchant marine ministries said they had no knowledge of the incident”

    and

“I just want to reiterate that this incident has NOT been verified yet”

As far as you are concerned, I am wrong whatever I say or do.

Well, your headline is “Drowned”, not “Possible Drownings”, so you’re giving the impression that you want to believe those allegations.

Also, Turkey and Greece have entered into a bilateral agreement on this issue; why hasn’t the Turkish government done more to prevent people smugglings on its side?

That’s a side of this story that deserves attention, too.

  7. 7 deviousdivaNo Gravatar

FairAndBalanced. If you wish to be accurate rather than clutch at straws, six people were DROWNED not “possibly drowned”. The question is whether they were thrown into the sea by the Greek coastguards or not.

Yes, that is another side of the story, about the Turkish government, but the post is not about that.

  8. 8 FairAndBalancedNo Gravatar

It’s another side of the story, and an important one.

As terrible as the fate of these people was (and I agree with you, it should never have happened), why do left-wing commentators like you refuse to focus on the governments (such as Turkey’s) which create the appalling conditions that cause these people to want to leave in the first place?

Greece did not create the political, economic, and social terrors which made these people flee; it has no predisposed emnity towards these people (unlike those people’s own governments), it is merely trying to keep its borders secure.

If you really want to solve this, you have to focus pressure on those countries causing the problem.

Greece is not causing the problem.

  9. 9 BandwagonNo Gravatar

    Hey, Turkey’s not the problem.

It’s America. Yeah, America is causing the problem.

Hey everybody, look at me, I’m cool!!

I can criticize America now and people will like me!

    Yippee!

and consider all the solutions ,, for all

WE WILL NEVER BE THE WAY IT WAS BEFORE , 1990.

    ————END STORY

and if theres truth to something ,its that the greek coast guard
    is overworked
underpaid , doesnt have manpower ,,to guard everything
has to play a oidipus role ,,
has to pay the price of greek political and world stupidity
by going off the deep end
thinking in the vastness of the deep sea , THEY can make policy
and play god , this as hephastos has said is not a greek .
“a greek is filoxenos and with a big heart for all peoples.”

youre mad now ,, but why ?

because it cant happen in greece ,,??

why..? whats the difference from the americans
kickinthe shit out of the iranians,,
or the guadanamo guards torturing people.

is the education and fear different ..?

do we as greeks have politics and politicians ,
that have the same opinion as BUSH
“capture torture ,, execute ,, just in case their terrorists
or i shit in my pants because their a different color or poor ..?
    so use preemptive strikes
and drown some of them JUST TO QUELL WHOSE FEARS ????

AND THE RICH GET RICHER ,,,,ON OUR STUPIDITY
