Yvette Jarvis

Yvette Jarvis, the first black woman to hold public office in Greece, is looking to win a second term. This time she is affiliated with New Democracy rather than Pasok (socialist) but as she told Athens News, her campaign remains unchanged.

improving life in Athens for all its residents, including immigrants who have no vote and no real say in local government

She explains the system of local government in Greece

The way the system works now, a third of the council is useless because only the majority [two-thirds] wins. This means that ideas from the other side - unless they are truly accepted by the majority - never get done even though they might be good for the community. If my candidate wins the majority and I am on the inside, I will be able to get my ideas heard

There are many issues that Yvette Jarvis wishes to address if elected. Rubbish, traffic and crime as well as initiatives

to improve downtrodden neighbourhoods and promote multiculturalism and tolerance among residents

Immigration and multiculturalism are a reality in Athens today and I believe the city still has the opportunity to learn from the past experiences of other places. There is still the chance to embrace and celebrate diversity rather than reject and marginalise it.

We know where that leads.
Nowhere.

As Yvette said in the Athens News

We need to start building bridges within the community. Yes, Athens has changed and it can’t go back to the way it was 25 years ago when everyone knew each other but I think we can make the neighbourhood again into a neighbourhood

She also said in that interview:

“I am on a ticket that is very diverse, that has people from all the political parties,” she told the Athens News on September 13 - one day after announcing her candidacy beside Kaklamanis. “There are people who were traditionally KKE [Greek Communist Party], Synaspismos [Coalition of the Left] and even LA.O.S. [Popular Orthodox Rally]. This is a reflection of the city of Athens.”

This supposed anti-racist is proud to run alongside ultra-nationalist ultra-racist hitlerite anti-semite LAOS candidates. In any other European country such a colaition would be unthinkable.

Yesterday in Eleftherotypia one can read the strong reaction of the Jewish community to this alignment.

For those who cannot read Greek here is a short by AFP in English:

ATHENS, Sept 14, 2006 (AFP) - The Greek Jewish community and a small left-wing parliamentary party on Thursday complained over an extreme-right politician included on the ticket of the front-running candidate for Athens in next month’s mayoral elections.
The Greek Central Jewish Council (KIS) said the controversial candidate was an “anti-Semitic” newspaper publisher who wrote an article at the height of the Lebanon crisis in July, accusing Jews of “nearly breaking Hitler’s record in terms of victims” and “surpassing him in savagery.”
An earlier complaint sent at the time to the mayoral candidate, popular ex-minister Nikitas Kaklamanis, met with no response, KIS said.
The Greek section of the Helsinki Monitor (GHM) on human rights also noted that the publisher, whom it identified as a leading member of the small Greek nationalist party LAOS, will be joined on Kaklamanis’ ticket by another LAOS cadre.
A spokesperson for Kaklamanis on Thursday told AFP that the mayoral candidate “believes that one’s political leaning does not count in the fight for a better Athens.”
“Those included on Mr Kaklamanis’ list pledge to adhere to his values,” the spokesperson said, adding that the ticket also includes left-wing representatives.
KIS countered that “the presence of people of such substance cannot be explained with excuses of multi-party representation”.
A member of the ruling New Democracy conservatives, Kaklamanis is heavily tipped to win the election in Athens, which has had a New Democracy mayor for the past 20 years.
Municipal elections will be held across Greece on October 15 and 22.

And those who want to know more on the hitlerite views of the LAOS candidate here is our release at the time:

    PRESS RELEASE

    23 July 2006

“The Jew if you wash him, your soap you will ruin” –
Anti-Semitism of extreme right Athens municipal candidate
with New Democracy’s Nikitas Kaklamanis blessed by Archbishop Christodoulos!

Greek Helsinki Monitor (GHM) calls upon Athens Mayoral candidate Nikitas Kaklamanis to exclude Thanassis Mylonopoulos from his ballot. Mr. Mylonopoulos, in the 23 July 2006 issue of the weekly newspaper “Alpha Ena” he is the director of, and in his personal page 3, published the crude anti-Semitic text: “The Jew if you wash him, your soap you will ruin. If we give them a little more time they’ll break Hitler’s record, in numbers of victims we mean. In brutality they’ve surpassed him.” The cover page of the same issue carried the headline “Jews in the role of the SS.”

GHM also calls upon Archbishop Christodoulos, who on 15 June 2006, “blessed” Thanassis Mylonopoulos along with three other extreme right LAOS party candidates for the Super-Prefecture of Athens-Piraeus and the Municipality of Athens, to publicly condemn the comments of the recipient of his blessings. Their meeting was not announced by the Archdiocese but was published in “Alpha Ena” on 17 June 2006, along with the announcement of his candidacy on the Athens ballot under Nikitas Kaklamanis. The adjacent column stressed the LAOS party’s objections to the construction of a mosque in the Elaionas district of Athens. The article called upon the “local Metropolitans to lead the reactions that come as new ‘Palaion Patron Germanoi’” [supposed to have led the inaugural meeting in Greece’s liberation struggle against the Ottomans in 1821].

At the same time, GHM calls upon Nikitas Kaklamanis as well as the New Democracy party leadership, who have accepted LAOS support to ND Mayoral and Prefectural candidacies, to distance themselves from the extreme right, xenophobic and racist LAOS party. GHM also calls upon the PASOK party leadership, who systematically strikes off its rolls members who do not support official PASOK party candidates, to ask those of its candidates, starting with Mayor of Kallithea Kostas Askounis, who have accepted LAOS party support, to disavow this support. Otherwise, these parties will be seen as fellow travellers with the LAOS party’s extreme positions.

Finally, GHM notes that yesterday’s anti-Semitic diatribe by the official organ of LAOS comes as a continuation of the ongoing promotion on LAOS’ TV “Teleasty” by press spokesman Adonis Georgiadis of the book “The Jews, the Entire Truth,” written by Kostas Plevris, also a LAOS cadre. This book is not only a monument of anti-Semitism but also extols Hitler and Nazism while expressing its disappointment that the Holocaust did not succeed in exterminating the entire Jewish people.

On the 32nd anniversary of the restoration of democracy, Nikitas Kaklamanis, Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, George Papandreou and Archbishop Christodoulos, are called upon to publicly condemn racism and those who propagandize it.

FROM mrs JARVIS to laos and PASOK and laos

politics sure makes strange bed fellows .

EVEN though i like mrs JARVIS , personally
    because of the affiliations ,,

mr P DIMITRAS has described above ,and are in full truth.

i personally will not support any parties or candidates

affiliated with LAOS or other fascist type politicians.

BUT I’D LIKE TO AMERICANIZE THE EXAMPLE:

IT WOULD BE LIKE HAVING ON THE SAME PARTY TICKET :

…….the late MRS MARTIN LUTHER KING

    and

…..the GRAND DRAGON OF THE KU KLUΞ KLAN

not to be taking the late mrs KINGS struggles in vain ,
i only used the example as to the seriousness of what is going on.
so maybe some will understand under color ,
and under bed-fellows,,, what is being created…..? =z=
