Migrants or the children of migrants who are currently studying in Greece and do not have a residence permit can apply to legalize their stay in the country, the Interior Ministry said yesterday. The amendment applies to people who are studying at state institutions in the secondary or tertiary sector and people who have graduated from these institutions after three years of study. Also the children of migrants who are at school in Greece will receive residence permits. Applicants have to submit the relevant paperwork and 150 euros to their local municipality. The deadline for applications is December 31 of this year.

Foreigners living in Greece who have applied for a residence permit or are waiting for their permit to be renewed will be allowed to leave the country to visit their homeland for their summer holidays, the Public Order Ministry said yesterday. People falling within this category will be allowed to leave Greece from July 5 as long as they return by September 5, the ministry said.

Yes, but the government has also stated that any immigrant applying for the 5-year permanent EU residence permit (which they have yet to comply with) who has been gone from Greece for a total of 10 months during that five year period of their continuous legal residence will be ineligible. Does this mean that the 2 months during the summer, time for Easter and Christmas, not to mention the 3-mont h period during the Olympics, when the government wanted to rid Athens of the "blight" of immigrants, will be accounted for in the 10 month allowable absence?
Melina, very good question. I do not know the answer to that but I will try and find out. The whole legislation is a minefield for immigrants, not least because the government keeps moving the goalposts.
