Abduction Update

The saga continues over the kidnapping of Pakistani men by secret agents from Greece and Britain, following the London bombings. A lawsuit has been filed against the former Public Order minister, Giorgos Voulgarakis.

Three of the Pakistani immigrants who claim that they were kidnapped by secret agents last summer have filed a criminal lawsuit against the public order minister at the time the alleged incident took place, Giorgos Voulgarakis.
The three men have accused Voulgarakis, who is now culture minister, of instigating the alleged abductions, shielding guilty parties and lying in Parliament about the incident.

There has been many claims and denials and so forth in the case. As I said before, I only hope that the truth comes out as to what happened to these men last summer.

Voulgarakis called the matter a “provocation or farce” as the government tried to play down the incident that allegedly took place after last year’s London terrorist bombings.

The lawsuit by Chodwry Gulnawaz Ahmed, Muhammad Munir and Rafaqat Mehmood Raja claimed Voulgarakis “knew about and supported (the abductions), offering full coverage (to the perpetrators) and instigating the acts.” The governments of Greece, Pakistan and Britain deny involvement.

The biggest step forward in the case so far, has been that after an investigaton the prosecutor found that 14 of the men had been illegally abducted.

The Pakistani migrants have proceeded with the legal case buoyed by a prosecutor’s decision last week to bring charges against “unknown persons.” After a four-month investigation, the prosecutor found that at least 14 Pakistanis were illegally abducted in Athens and northern Greece and questioned in July last year about their links with Pakistanis in London.

In response to the prosecutor’s ruling that the kidnappings were probably carried out by state officials, the government said that it will wait for completion of the judicial investigation.

Greek minister slams Pak on kidnapping
    Saturday, May 20, 2006 (Athens):

Greece’s public order minister said kidnapping was a Pakistani sport and dismissed claims that Pakistani immigrants were abducted for questioning by Greek and British agents after last year’s London transit bombings.

Vyron Polydoras said the migrants’ allegations could only be explained by the “sport of mutual abduction in which members of the most amiable Pakistani community in our country indulge.”

He was apparently referring to recent violent kidnappings of Asians in Greece by migrant smuggling rings who demanded ransom from their families at home.

“Greece’s National Intelligence Service did nothing outside of the law,” Polydoras told parliament on Friday.

    Terror links

The governments of Greece, Pakistan and Britain deny any involvement in the case.

A Greek prosecutor last week filed criminal charges against “unknown persons” for the alleged abductions of Pakistani migrants following the July 7, 2005 London transit bombings.

This followed a four-month investigation that established at least 14 Pakistanis were illegally abducted in Athens and northern Greece and questioned July 16-22 last year about their links with Pakistanis in London.

Prosecutor Nikos Degaitis’ findings said the abductions were “probably carried out by state officials.”

Court officials said two Greek intelligence agents were being treated as suspects, but Degaitis was unable to establish any involvement by foreign services. (AP)

What kind of attitude is that ! Pakistani people liking to kidnap each other and I never knew kidnapping was a sport. This is so ludicrous. If these kind of comments weren’t so dangerous, it would be totally laughable.

Well, Polydoras could have accused the Pakistanis of being responsible for tapping everybody’s phones too, but he didn’t. Shows restraint.

    I second the coomendations

and for the record in Greek the excerpt from the Parliament’s site:

“Ξέρετε σε τι σπορ επιδίδονται οι αδερφοί μας Πακιστανοί, οι παρεπιδημούντες στην Ελλάδα; Στο σπορ της αρπαγής, στο σπορ της απαγωγής αμοιβαίως. Ο ένας απάγει τον άλλο. Συμπηγνύουν συμμορίες με σκοπό την απαγωγή.”
