HUMAN RIGHTS CANDIDATE

On May 9th voting will be taking place for Human Rights Council candidates at the UN. Greece has put forward it's pledge. Despite the rosy picture the pledge paints, Greece has a

long list of often rather serious human rights violations that indicate that Greece’s human rights record, when compared with other EU countries, leaves a lot to be desired. It is not accidental that in 2005 the European Court of Human Rights judgments on Greece (105 – only 2 with no violation found) were exceeded only by those on Turkey (290) and Ukraine (120) with the next EU country being Italy with 79 judgments (preceded by Russia with 83)

Also…

In its pledge, Greece mentions as a “long standing commitment… to submit national reports in a timely manner.” The table below indicates that not once has Greece submitted in a timely manner any report, while sometimes reports were submitted with delays ranging from 5 to 12 years.

These are some of the violations I compiled from the GHM report:

CAT report (Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment) delayed 2 years

HRC report (Human Rights Committee) delayed 6 years

CEDAW report (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women) delayed 5 years

CERD report (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) delayed 7 years

CESCR report (International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights) delayed 12 years

CRC report (Convention on the Rights of the Child) delayed 6 years

With a bureaucracy like the one Greece has, it is no wonder. You have to remember that in Greece, when the few benefit the many are ignored.
Take ASEP and car imports for example. Both illegal under European law. Both very much profitable for a few in Greece, hence taxpayers foot the bill/penalty from EU.

    My god

Is it because the Greek laws do not enforce the legal mechisms for these human rightst to go through. We UK have the Human Rights Act which is a law for people not in breach of human rights (but it is only for ECHR), but not UN Or other conventions like you stated above.

Do the Greek Government aware of the concept of human rights?

Welcome John Savva and thank you for commenting. It is a complicated situation over here. There are laws and structures in place but bureaucracy is such that the process is slow to say the least. It seems to me that much of the goings on here (and elsewhere) are more for show than because of a real committment to the issues.

As to your last question: Is the Greek government aware of the concept of Human Rights ?

    Answers on a postcard anyone?
