My favorite quote from that article: "when raising funds from the European Union for the improvement of the Roma situation, Greece officially has a Roma population of 300,000. Otherwise, their number is decreased to some 100-120,000"

That's the Greek government for you!

What an informative and interesting blog!
We've lived in Romania, a country with a large Roma population and have visited a horrific ghetto of so called 'government housing for Roma". It was truly appalling. We saw families living in cardboard boxes with winter approaching. I'd like to commend Ms. Leslie Hawke (the mother of the actor Ethan Hawke) who is living and working in a town in the middle of Romania. First, through the Peace Corps, and now on her own, she has set up schools and programs for Roma children and women. She's a real heroine!
I'll be back often- keep up your wonderful work.

I am 1/4 Roma. My family has been in the states for two generations. Last year I did some volunteer work in Greece, Macedonia and Bulgaria for eight months.

Greece certianly has some problems but the largest amount of violence, hatred and govnerment harrassment was certainly in Macedonia where the fear of the Roma is really evident. The Greek authorities knew we were there and ignored us, in western Macedonia we were hounded, threatened, subject to stops and searched etc. Bulgaria is middle way in attitude (popular and govenrment) betwen the two.

Great work.

Hello! I just noticed your blog and I already put it in my favorites list. I'm glad I found one Greek who can see the truth out there. Greece has to be changed!
