NO SERIOUS OFFENSE UPDATE

This is an update from yesterday’s post. The government WON it’s appeal to reduce the compensation of 12,000 euros to Dewan Habib for his imprisonment for a year in a holding cell.

From Athens News

According to Habib’s lawyer, Spyros Kloudas, who is a member of the Greek Helsinki Monitor, his client did not have access to fresh air and medical care and had little opportunity to exercise during his 12-month imprisonment. The cell he was in was also heavily overcrowded and unsanitary. According to Kloudas, the cell was roach-infested, overcrowded and filthy. He also says his client had to share soiled mattresses with other inmates.

The amount was reduced to 3,000 euros. Mr Habib had sued for 30,000 euros.

Habib, who managed to apply for a residence during the country’s previous legalisation of undocumented migrants in 2001, resides legally in Athens.

So, one small victory for the government and one more nail in the coffin of humanity. Who knows how many other people are suffering from this complete lack of caring and responsibility.

3,000 euros for 12 months of hell?! My god, that’s dreadful. What despicable greed on behalf of the government. I find it outrageous that not only did they treat this guy like dirt, but then they refused to pay him the meagre 12,000 euros (which is peanuts itself). The inhumanity and callousness is hard to comprehend.
