Greek State justifies degrading detention conditions for migrants
Irregular migrants are responsible for the increasing criminality rate. For this reason and for the sake of public order, degrading detention conditions do not constitute a serious offense against human dignity. This is the argumentation used by the Greek State to appeal against a court decision to provide pecuniary compensation of 12,000 euros to a man from Bangladesh who was illegally detained by the authorities for one whole year, under cramped conditions, in Piraeus.

As reported in Greek Press Nea, 28 February / Rizospastis, 1 March / Apogevmatini, 2 March)

Well, excuse me for choking on my tea once again!

The Greek state is justifying the inhumane detention conditions in this country by aligning themselves with unfounded scaremongering of increased crime caused by illegal migrants. Please read this article
(I posted it before but cannot find it again)

The people that the Greek state is holding in these appalling conditions are not criminals. They are undocumented migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The Greek government does not care. They would rather listen to what is bandied about in the tabloids and the trash media rather than take responsibility for what is a shameful and hidden side of this country. They should pay out the compensation and thank their lucky stars that they are not paying it to ALL the victims of their negligence and barbarity.
I would write more but I have a full on cold and I am sneezing so much I am worried about blowing up my keyboard.

Hey EllasDevil, it’s a long time since I saw you here? What was up with wordpress? To answer your question, as far as I know it was a Greek court in a case of Dewan Habib versus the state. The appeal was won through the Athens Appeals court.

Both are Administrative Courts (AC) in Athens. He won 12000 at the First Instance AC and then the state’s appeal was partly accepted by the Appelas AC.
