LAND MINES
Published by deviousdiva March 3rd, 2006 in Personal.March 1st was the 7th anniversary of the Land Mine Treaty signed in Ottawa by 122 countries including Greece. There has been extensive effort to remove land mines from the borders since 2003 and the country has another 10 years to complete the removal.
Meanwhile, there are still deaths and injuries. Kathimerini follows the story of one land mine victim, Mr Guma Nhdikumana who is the first to obtain asylum in Greece. The problem remains for the victims of these mines that, although they receive primary medical care in hospitals, they do not get any other help. No rehabilitation, prosthetics, help with housing or welfare.
For the whole horrific story of Guma and Radwan (who was handed his deportation papers in hospital after losing both his legs) read here.
