XENOPHOBIA IN SCHOOL

Via the Athens News

Just to give another indication that xenophobia is alive and well and not going away any time soon. A survey in one secondary school in Thermis, Thessaloniki asked 457 pupils whether they believed people of different nationalities and cultures can live together. 60% of the girls said yes they thought they could while only 53% of boys agreed. (It is not stated how the survey was worded or in what framework it was conducted)

I think that even the 60% is extremely worrying, let alone the lower percentage for the boys. I cannot say that I am surprised by the result though. There are no governmental initiatives to educate pupils about other cultures or nationalities. There are some exceptional teachers in some schools who have the foresight and the willingness to address some of these issues. Fortunately, my child’s teacher is one of them. The extraordinary level of “casual racism” I have heard from the mouths of primary school children shocked me. I believe this is slowly changing in her class. Children can be taught that they have nothing to fear from diversity and that their own culture or identity is not threatened by knowing something of other people. It can be learnt as easily as racism and xenophobia is learned.

There is a new project starting in March this year set up by the Women’s Initiative for Peace (Winpeace) and Centre for Research and Action on Peace (Kede) that will focus on peace education in schools. I will write a post about this at a later date as it all sounds very interesting.

I wouldn’t even dare ask that question over here I am quite sure that the results woudl be far worse…

  2. 2 deviousdivaNo Gravatar

I’ve been out of England so long I forget what it’s like. Has it got so much worse in the last 10 years? Sigh.

I guess in some ways it reminds me of when I was a school age girl in America (North Carolina and Tennessee). There were very few blacks at my school, let alone any other ethnicities. Even Jewish people were sort of a curio. But I don’t think it was a situation where any of us would have said that we couldn’t live in peace with other cultures/nationalities - although I guess I have no way of knowing. My mother always went out of her way to make sure I had friends of as many different nations as she could conjure up in our mostly white neighborhoods, so I guess I always saw anyone who wasn’t white as someone desireable to get to know.

I suppose it is a rather weird question to ask children, even in secondary school - because those who aren’t exposed to other cultures/nationalities maybe haven’t really given it much that. But perhaps there are those who have grown up with parents who taught them to be xenophobic.

In my elementary school class, we all had mixed ethnic backgrounds so if I were asked that question, I would have said “yes, we can all live together except for Gustav who steals my pastel crayons.” LOL When you grow up and your next door neighbour to the right is a Greek family and your teacher is Scottish and your next door neighbour to the right is Lebanese and your own grandfather speaks with an accent…then I guess the question was answered before it was asked.

I think that you’re quite right to use the words “casual racism.” I see a great deal of it in Romania as well, where gypsies (Roma) are as much a swear word as a race.

I went to an international school Diva… so I did not have the expercience of xenophobia at school.
However when I went to the Greek University I was really MISERABLE.
We were only 2 foreigners in over 300 students that year. I was a curio…
and from what I found out few girls I befriended never had foreign friends before so it was also culturally shocking for them to have a Filipina at the university.

As for the younger filipinos here who go to Greek school some said they do feel being so different and worse some of their greek friends do not really ask about our culture as well.

I posted something on my blog about a Filipina who won an essay competition at the Greek school and when they were about to leave for a trip (prizewas a visit to europarliament) her teacher said to her.. THE COMPETITION WAS MEANT ONLY FOR THE GREEKS!

I found this blog through Molara Wood. Your blog has to be good, if Molara recommends it.

Very good post about an important topic. You don’t automatically think of Greece and racism.

What is clear to me are two things:

    1) It strikes me as quite odd that despite all this “racism” that whites have teeming from their very pores, non-whites continue to flock to live amongst us in uncontrollable droves. Certainly you do not see the reverse of this quite abnormal behaviour. I for one, and millions of other whites do not uproot ourselves to live amongst blacks or other non-whites in our own countries, let alone other countries. What does it say about people who just cannot leave where they so strongly feel they are unwanted? What does it say about people who cannot produce such vigorous livelihoods in their own countries that they need to parasitically attach themselves to hosts and then expect the host to change?

    2) I am ecstatic that despite half a century of indoctrinating egalitarianism and forced integration in the US, this evil seed just will not catch. We have a Harvard study that tells us segregation is alive and well and increasing. People want the right to school their children in a safe and racially homogenous environment. People may parrot the Marxist party line, however their actions do speak louder than their words.

Numbers do not lie. People do.

Ethnocentrist, where do you live? Do you live in Greece? Or England? I’m sure that whereever you live or whatever heritage line you come from, that you have not been told to go back there? Have you? So, why should immigrants do it? They want better life and have right to get it.

  11. 11 deviousdivaNo Gravatar

Melusina, I believe that racism and xenophobia is taught/learned. My hope is that this new initiative will go a long way in combatting that.

SeaWitch, “except for Gustav who steals my pastel crayons” LOL

Sha, congratulations to K for fighting that racism and getting the prize that she deserved.

Renegade Eye, welcome to my blog. People just think of Greece as a holiday destination. They tend to forget that it is a European country and that it should behave like one.

    Ethnocentrist…

Little joe, welcome to my blog. Thank you for your reply to the above. Good questions.

  12. 12 melusinaNo Gravatar

    Lol, good reply for Ethno…

  13. 13 Ethnocentrist

I wouldn’t say the response was “good”, but more in line with expected. Also, Little Joe’s questions have been dealt with in the past and there is no need to repeat the answers…which would fall on deaf ears anyway.

I felt it was somewhat important to inject this little Greek bitchfest, with the repeated Greece bashing posts, with some reality and facts instead of letting it spiral out of control as is what usually happens in stereotypical sewing circles. :)

Diva, I not only dare, I do. My blog is more a factfest including the most recent Harvard study. You may refer to it any way you wish, however the difference is that the information I post is meant to draw attention to the biased inequality foisted upon the native inhabitants of the western world and its detrimental effects that originates from an untenable ideology. You manage to whine about a country that you have the freedom to leave if you wish, though you want changed. The natives seem more or less content with it however…

There’s always the Jewel of the Caribbean for you if it get’s too difficult in Greece.

Zardoz, sadly it always seems to be the case that people find this blog more interesting when there’s an argument going on. I love discussion but some people do not just discuss or disagree, they become rude and insulting. I have been down this road with ethnocentrist many times and I do not have so much patience any more.

Ethnocentrist, the UK seems to be 46th on the list (way behind the US) What is your point?

I think you need to step back a bit and realize you live in an all around good country and stop your incessant, unfair whining. As they say in America…love it or leave it. I’m pretty sure this can apply to Greece as well.

Speaking of insulting, you insult around 10 million people every time you smear the country with one rude post after another ESPECIALLY when the UK is no prize currently and both are better than your ancestral homeland of Jamaica, which you are mum about. You see, one can always find something to complain about.

Tony, Thank you and welcome to my blog.

Ethnocentrist. I have posted story after story of human rights abuses, racism etc that Greece is ,and should be, held accountable for. If you see this as whining then I can’t help you. Please move on to any number of other sites that talk about all the good things about Greece. There are plenty of them. This blog set out to be, and IS, very specific about it’s aim. I have been upfront about that from the beginning. If you don’t lke why do you stick around? My guess is that you want to discredit me because I am a foreigner. Would you have the same reaction to a blog like this written in Greek by a Greek? Hmm. Maybe? I’m not sure? I do not make this stuff up. It’s there for everyone to read. Everyday. I just bring it all together in one place.

Anyway, I’m out of here now. The ever popular Diva (joke!) is invited to two parties tonight! Please do not abuse my absence.

What a lively discussion and a comical one as well. In my case, I have not experienced Xenofobia much because I am part Greek. Just to let everyone know. I can see your IP addresses. So if you want to post infantile comments pretending to be ‘comical’ characters, I would suggest you do so from another computer. Ethnocentrist, I would have thought it would have been beneath you to stoop to that level to disrupt this thread. Just to clarify for everyone, ethnocentrist was also Ping Chow and Hong Kong Phooey. I’m not laughing.

  33. 33 Ethnocentrist

Just for the record, you take yourself way too seriously with your hypocritical issues and it shows. You write about topics on your host country and smear all its people, then only want fawning accolades for your “research”, “accomplishment”, and slight at the hands of Greece. Sorry, I and many others do not see it that way at all. I didn’t know that dissent equates to “disruption”? Maybe you should clarify on the header that you only want bootlicking around here? That is the standard modus operandi of all leftist sites anyway and why should you be any different? Clearly you nor anyone else, including your knight in dull armour can never address anything I bring up and resort to crap for rebuttal.

As to your near pathologic obsession to attract viewers while closely monitoring your hit level and IP addresses in order to become the new “Joan of Athens” for your cause, let me state a few facts. We both know that you enjoy a little “anonymous” posting, specifically on my blog in the recent past. But then, it WAS beneath me to call you on it. We both know that it is not alter-ids that trouble you in reference to Zardoz/zardot/hop sing and Scruffy with his occasional supportive ones. It is the fact that I went along with it that troubles you. For if you have 1000 supportive comments from one person, I highly doubt it would trouble you so much, right? And finally, some need to solicit viewership across the blogosphere in order to get visitors, while others simply need to write about truly important topics and visitors come. I’m hovering around 300 visitors a day from all over the western world without uttering a single invitation. Just a little FYI for you because some things are interesting and some are not. :)

    Are you laughing now?

  34. 34 Scruffy AmericanNo Gravatar

Ethno, Me and Zardoz are not the same person. I’m sure Diva and Zardoz can confirm this.

In fact, Zardoz has more in common with you as he hates President Bush. Zardoz, am I right?

It’s interesting indeed how people of totally opposite views can have something in common.

  35. 35 melusinaNo Gravatar

I don’t see how DeviousDiva’s blog is “whining” and “bitching”. She, too, is simply stating facts, with a little bit of her own reaction thrown in now and then. So what if she is showing a negative side of Greece? Greeks are *hardly* above reproach. As a matter of fact, I really can’t think of any countries or peoples who are above reproach. This is where she happens to live, and the aim of her blog is to show human rights and immigration abuses and issues here in Greece. It isn’t exactly rocket science you know, yet some of the people that comment here can’t seem to grasp that fact.

I felt her response to Ethnocentrist being simply ellipses was appropriate, because why bother to have the same old, same old debate?

  36. 36 deviousdivaNo Gravatar

As I have explained before, when I moved to wordpress very recently, it allowed me to check ip addresses. I never had that ability before and it was another commenter who advised me to check them on this thread.

I have never left a comment on your blog anonymously. So I do not know what that slight refers to. Perhaps you have the grand idea that I am the only person in the whole blog world who disgrees with you?

People mostly come to my blog because I have commented on theirs or put their blogs in my links. That’s the way it works. I do take my blog very seriously and make an effort to respond to evryone who comes here. That is not going to change. I have no plans on becoming the new anything of Athens. I believe people come here because they like what they see here, unlike you who seems to like coming here to insult me. Many people have disagreed with me. I have discussed issues with people with different views and have not insulted them, deleted them or otherwise.

I realise my exposing your exploits has made you angry and you are trying to get back at me but it really isn’t going to work.

Your efforts to put me down are not working. Yes, it hurts to be constantly insulted by you but you are not going to stop me. People will judge for themselves.

And no, I am still not laughing.

  37. 37 starfish

It ’s sad to see that you are still having the same old battles with the same old person. Please remember, he is only one and we are many. Keep up the great work. You have many supporters.
Ethno or what ever your name is, you are a bully and a liar. You know it and we know it. You have just proved to us once again what kind of a person you really are. Take your racist bullying somewhere else. Your blog is hateful. No-one in their right mind would comment over there. Get a life.

  38. 38 Ethnocentrist

As for ethnocentrist, I am glad he’s not around anymore. His blog makes me sick to my stomach. I don’t want an apology from him . He believes the things he writes about and a shallow apology would not even begin to cover the hurt and anger I feel when I read his blog. I hope he is very lonely over there in his swamp of hate and paranoia.

You do remember writing this just a few short posts ago, correct? This is in my absence no less and by any standards an insult. So please get off the high horse of yours when you state I only come to “insult” you. I come to give an opposing view and as of yet, have not heard why you or anyone else does not pack your bags and leaves? I also have not heard why people flock to live amongst racist whites and why we must open the doors to the rest of the world? Two questions that will remain unanswered, I suppose.

I am not per se angry, but more appalled at the hypocrisy of your “exposing” my “exploits” when I simply followed the lead of someone else. I’m sure you know who they are, yet did not feel the need to “expose their exploits”. So again, it is not the exploit that upsets you, but the person.

We both know of your postings on my blog and I do know you posted once or twice anonymously. However, that is not something I can prove now nor the most important issue though it does go towards character and attempts at character assassination.

Melusina states: This is where she happens to live, and the aim of her blog is to show human rights and immigration abuses and issues here in Greece. It isn’t exactly rocket science you know, yet some of the people that comment here can’t seem to grasp that fact.

as well as… I felt her response to Ethnocentrist being simply ellipses was appropriate, because why bother to have the same old, same old debate?

See my above points that address people who languish in places that they do not seem to be happy in. As to your “same old, same old” comment. Well, all we need to do is look at the posting titles on this blog’s front page to see that there really isn’t much “variety” that you think is here and that my presence takes away from. Is there? What you’re really saying is that YOU have already formulated your opinion of this one long, tiresome topic and do not desire opposition to it. Great and noted. The problem is, unlike your blog that deals with issues like Thanos’ snoring and the like, this one deals with a country and people that I have significant attraction to and will not stand idly by and read a bunch of garbage ad infinitum. She wants to delve into the world of human rights and attack a country and people, then she should be willing to accept stinging criticism. She also can take this place private and the problem of me would be solved as well.

  39. 39 Ethnocentrist

    Blog Stats

We’ve had a constant stream of feedback about the new stats system. This covers the most frequently asked questions:

    * Can I filter out my own visits? Yes! Unlike other systems that require you to register specific IP’s to ignore, WordPress knows it’s you visiting because you’re logged in. All visits from a site’s admin will now be filtered out of the results.
    * Can I see who’s visiting? No, we don’t record IP’s of individual visitors.
    * Can I look at older stats? Coming soon.
    * Can I get a summary of my traffic over time? Coming soon.

Yes, I wrote that but I wrote it on MY blog, in response to Scruffy American, not on yours. I will say it one more time I have never posted anonymously on your blog. Please point to me the comments that you think are mine. I cannot prove that I didn’t so it’s pointless to argue I guess. People will just have to make up their own minds on that one.

Following the lead of someone else eh? Actually I only found out that YOU were using alternative ID’s. Everyone else was coming from different ip addresses. I am not a psychic. I cannot tell if someone is posting under different names from different computers. I am very new to this ip checking. Just face it, you were caught out this time. Anyone else who was being a bit cleverer in hiding their identity slipped by unnoticed.

Yes, I could take this place private but why would I? I have nothing to be ashamed of and you are pretty much my only “problem”. And even you are not much of a problem. As you can see from the response you get.

Please note ethnocentrist. Again. I post articles that are in the press here daily. They are not hidden away or obsure. I cannot see why you have such a problem with the fact that I just bring those articles together in one place. Much like many other bloggers do and (dare I say it?) so do you. We do it for different reasons but we do the same thing.

Zardoz’s posts make my head hurt. Until he is able to write coherently, there is no need for him to address me.

  47. 47 Ethnocentrist

And no, we do not do the same thing though it may appear so to you.

Me pointing out one inequality after another after another labels me a racist by the mentally addled that frequent here. You bashing…oh sorry…pointing out inequality in Greece brings about hugfests. What’s the difference?

I am complaining about a global attack on all things white and the sheer nerve of that brings about the calls of racist, bully etc. You electively move to a country BECAUSE it is safer than your previous residence and EVEN MORE SAFER than your ancestral homeland and expect everything to change for you all the while being coddled by the addled.

I cannot move anywhere to be free of this psychosis that has infested the west. You can move to be free of Greek racism.

    Just a few differences.

Your brain is hard to understand. WORDPRESS stated that they do not have the ability to track IP addresses! That quote above on Frequently asked questions comes from WORDPRESS and I gave the link too. If WORDPRESS says they do not track IPs, how come you’re so special with WORDPRESS?

MY brain is hard to understand? I get email notification of new comments here on WORDPRESS and the ip addresses are there. I am certainly not special with wordpress. It’s there in my email. I am not responsible for wordpress. That’s the way it goes. Maybe you are behind the times? That’s the end of this discussion. I am pi**ed off that you accuse me of lying or somehow bending the rules. Try Wordpress and see what you find before accusing me of lying or fraud?

And this is the end of this discussion from me.

    Zardoz,

My comparison to you with Ethnocentrist was based ONLY on the fact that you guys don’t like Bush. I’ve seen his comments on Phylax regarding Bush as well as your referring to Bush as a “Redneck” in a past discussion.

Certainly, I did not infer that you are a racist in any way, so please don’t make the mistake with me. I think that at least on this point, we can agree 100%.

You are not a racist and either am I.

    Zardoz,

Ok, thanks for clarifying. I appreciate the response. I also don’t hate anyone but sometimes I take personally comments against America. Sometimes it hurts when I hear people criticize my America. As I’ve said before, I should work on this.

Anyways, I certainly don’t know how we got off on the wrong foot. You used to post on my blog, and I hope you will again one day.

Mr Zardoz: Sorry for any misunderstanding regarding the use of “Zardots”. No attempt was made to utilize your blog name “Zardoz”. It was for this reason that we purposefully misspelled the name as “Zardots” as a flattering way to recognize that you “caught on” early regarding our Bonanza fun. In fact, you mentioned that some old TV show characters had been made into blog personas. The Bonanza team thought it would be a neat way to acknowledge that point by creating a parody of sort, while still giving our support to Diva on the issue of Xenophobia in Schools.

It is said that imitation is the greatest form of flattery. This was our intention. No disrespect was meant. As you, we also enjoy the old TV shows, and saw the Bonanza theme as a way to post our ideas, in a humorous way. No further satirical comments will be made by the Bonanza team as we wish to offend no one.

Welcome bitingbeaver. Thank you for the words of support and yes, it still needs to be said even when people don’t want to hear it.
