DYING FOR A BETTER LIFE
Published by deviousdiva February 22nd, 2006 in Personal.More heartbreaking reading from Kathimerini today in an article about people trying to cross Greece’s mountainous northern border during winter. In particular, the discovery of a woman's body who the authorities have been unable to identify. Stavros Tzimas writes:
So the unknown woman became just another statistic in the long list of illegal immigrants who regularly lose their lives on the northern borders of what they saw as their promised land.
I am unclear about how it is possible for two people to be left in a hospital for TWO YEARS before anyone did anything about their plight?
Two Tanzanians were left in a Komotini hospital for two years after their feet had to be amputated after their crossing of the Rhodope mountains. Eventually, townspeople took up a collection so the men could return home.
At the end of the article Tzimas writes:
These are just some of the terrible tragedies that occur every winter in Greece’s mountainous northern border, but never make the headlines.
It seems to me that some people's lives (and deaths) are considered more important than others.

Greekhelsinki, I have written about many of the incidents I have come across since this blog began. I think it’s time I did a repeat posting?
Spellcheck, it is not necessary to correct people’s spelling here. Many people are writing in their second languge or are just writing in a hurry or simply make a mistake. We all know what the writer meant. I have seen appalling spelling in some comments here but the sentiment is understood.
“And there are many more incidents of people being shot at, torture or blown up by landmines over the years - and hardly anyone cares in the “craddle of democracy””
Those are cases during the time of Nato
