Actually in the US, International women’s day is not celebrated much or even known really. I asked a friend of mine (a woman) why they don’t really celebrate it in the states and she told me that in the United States, every day is Women’s day and we don’t need one specific day to tell us that we are great. We know this every day…..
Of course, we know we are great and wonderful everyday LOL. The idea is that there is one day to highlight all the issues that still need to be addressed. For example, women and girls do two thirds of the world’s work, most of it unwaged. I reckon it’s time that this work was recognised and paid for.

While it is true that International Women’s Day is not really celebrated in the US I think that says more about how little wimmin’s issues are paid attention to, not necessarily how far we’ve come. After all, Queer Pride month is no longer recognized nationally in the US, but i don’t really think that’s because of how liberated Queer people are.
And even if it were the case that wimmin were so incredibly liberated in the US that every day was wimmin’s day, then that doesn’t make up for the fact that this is International Women’s Day. Why not spend at least one day a year showing a little international solidarity with all the wimmin who aren’t quite so lucky to be making the same wages as their male counterparts. Oops, we don’t have that here either. My bad:)
